Form New Ways of Practicing Environmental Sustainability

Have you seen this map on campus?Sustainability is a core value at The New School and an essential feature of the physical campus and the university community. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website says: “Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To pursue sustainability is to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations.”The Tishman Environment and Design Center is committed to fostering an environmental philosophy and an understanding of sustainability that digs deeper than simply championing the concepts of being "green” or “eco-friendly.” At the Tishman Center and The New School sustainability is truly cross-disciplinary, incorporating and addressing cities, climate, inequality, policy, design, and social justice.Our new Sustainability Wayforming map is not just a resource highlighting sustainable features on campus. It is a tool for students, faculty, and staff at The New School to identify the resources available to help them form new, more sustainable ways of interacting with the campus and the community. We’ve identified traditional sustainability resources like places to refill your reusable water bottle, recycle, and lock your bike. We’ve also identified offices that serve as important community resources, places to rest and relax, and places to read and observe.We’ll be digging into each element on the Sustainability Wayforming map week by week during the Fall 2016 semester.
