The New School Stands With Standing Rock

Since August, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota has been protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline on tribal lands. They have been joined by thousands of activists, protesters, and members of other tribes in solidarity with their mission to protect their lands and water.  The water protectors have vowed to stand their ground in the face of police violence; sub-freezing winter temperatures; an evacuation order from North Dakota governor Jack Dalrymple; and warnings of looming arrests by the Army Corps of Engineers.

On Friday, December 2, The New School is excited to host a teach-in in support of the Oceti Sakowin Oyate’s (The Great Sioux Nation) resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). 

Make a donation

dropnswapdaplStudent organizations including Students of Solidarity and Students Decolonizing Academia are coordinating donation drives for supplies and funds to support the water protectors at Standing Rock:

  • On Monday, December 5th, there will be a table in the Social Justice Hub (UC, 5th floor) from 6:30-8:30pm where volunteers will be collecting donations such as warm clothing, blankets, and non-perishable foods. If you wish to donate but can't make it then, contact Ana Remis, remia021@newschool.edu.
  • In partnership with the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, a nonprofit organization founded in '94 and Redrum Motorcycle Club, an Indigenous/Native/First Nations club founded in '06, students are raising money to with a goal of purchasing ten winter shelters, all equipped with a wood burning stove/heating device, for the Water Protectors at Standing Rock and Split Rock Camps. As temperatures are soon to drop within the next two weeks to 3 degrees, the health of the Protectors is crucial. Each of the shelters can sleep 10-12 people and each unit costs approximately $1,000. The goal is to raise the funds and buy the shelters so they can be delivered to Standing Rock before Christmas. Contribute via GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/shelters4protectors

Share your thoughts and ideas

A cross-campus meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 13th at 9:00 PM with a variety of student organizations. (Location TBD- check back soon for details) The meeting will be a roundtable discussion with all groups organizing direct actions or other projects in response to the election and #noDAPL. It will be an open forum about using the school's housing resources as a tool for these types of resistance organizing.
