Welcome (Back) From the Tishman Environment and Design Center!

The Tishman Environment and Design Center welcomes you to the new school year! We are looking forward to another great year, working with familiar faces, and getting to know the newest members of the New School community.

The mission of the Tishman Center is to foster the integration of bold design, policy, and social justice approaches to environmental issues to advance just and sustainable outcomes in collaboration with communities.The Tishman Center sponsors a number of projects and programs:

  • Research: We work with Faculty, Students, Visiting Scholars, and partner organizations to support research and practice that falls into three general categories: Environmental and Climate Justice; Zero Waste and the Circular Economy; and Food. 2017-2018 research projects include:

    • Hosting a Zero Waste Conference in Spring 2018,

    • Conducting research on state level climate mitigation strategies with external environmental justice scholars,

    • Research and partnership around the dearth of climate justice analytics.

  • Curriculum: We are engaged in a multi-year effort to institute university-wide sustainability learning outcomes at The New School. Following a mandate from the Board of Trustees, all New School students will have these outcomes embedded into their program of study.

  • Campus Sustainability: The Tishman Center serves as a hub for campus sustainability engagement and action, often in collaboration with other departments. Large projects include:

    • Good As New materials/supplies collection and Free Sale

    • AASHE STARS reporting

    • General outreach including Orientation presentations, monthly tabling in the University Center, and supporting sustainability-focused student organizations

    • Maintaining the New School’s Sustainability Pledge

  • Communications: We strive to keep all New School students, faculty, and staff up-to-date on the latest environment and sustainability news at the University. Be sure to check out our blog, follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

A message from the Director concerning Charlottesville

The events of the past weeks have illustrated the painful and ugly truth that racism and white supremacy have not yet been eradicated in this country. The Tishman Environment and Design Center categorically condemns the actions of white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and others who perpetrate acts or sentiments of hatred and bigotry. Further, we condemn the violence against the anti-racist protestors in Charlottesville and all forms of violence against those who strive to secure social justice and equity.Too often, the same people who are overtly harmed or targeted by racism and racist acts are also overburdened by the less obvious health and safety threats from environmental pollutants and other hazards, which stems from structural and systemic racism. The Tishman Center stands for peace, justice, and solidarity.
