WhyHunger Communications Paid Internship Spring 2016

Position Description

WhyHunger is seeking a creative, motivated and committed intern to assist the Communications Department in implementing strategic communications initiatives at a thriving global non-profit.
WhyHunger is a leader in building the movement to end hunger and poverty by connecting people to nutritious, affordable food and by supporting grassroots solutions that inspire self-reliance and community empowerment.
WhyHunger works to support, resource and build the capacity of community organizations and social movements that are implementing new ideas and developing groundbreaking projects to transform their communities.
At the same time, they help to build networks of grassrootsorganizations and knit together social movements that share a vision of healthy, sustainable communities leading to greater mobilization and stronger advocacy to realize an end to poverty and hunger.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Communications Director, the Communications Intern will gain hands on experience in implementing strategic communications, including online marketing, social media, media relations, writing and editing articles, outreach campaigns and general communications projects.A valued and supported member of the team, the Communications  Intern will have real responsibilities and impact, alongside the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of communications in the non-profit setting.


Projects include

• Assist with planning, execution and evaluation of social media strategy• Draft and edit creative content including articles, graphics and promotional materials for use across various platforms• Assist with the creation and distribution of regular e-newsletters• Assist with planning and outreach activities for spring marketing campaigns and events• Collaborate with program staff to gather stories, images and quotes from our grassroots partners• Assist with managing a photo sharing library• Assist with managing WhyHunger’s blog• Assist member of the team with follow up and general office duties as needed


Qualifications

• Experience in communications, journalism, graphic design or comparable skills• Excellent writing and interpersonal skills• Experience with social media (facebook, twitter, instagram) and storytelling• Strong attention to detail• Basic graphic design skills and ability to learn new technologies• Ability to work on multiple projects and manage time efficiently, flexibility and initiative• A commitment to social justice and an interest in hunger, poverty and food justice• A sense of humor and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team• Website, Constant Contact, Google Analytics and video editing experience a plus
