Daneille Foster-Russell's Capstone on Anaerobic Digestion of Organic Refuse as Waste-To-Energy Option

Daneille Foster-Russell, an M.S. Candidate in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management at the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy, completed her capstone research on anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic refuse as a waste-to-energy option for New York City with Assistant Professor Ana Baptista, Ph.D. The project was a consultancy with Energy Vision, an NYC environmental organization.Yearly, New York City spends over $300 million to remove 14 million metric tons of waste, most of which ends up in landfills in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia (NYCMO, 2015). Foster-Russell’s research found that awareness and the building of a market around AD has grown steadily in the last few years. The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) found anaerobic digestion to be a feasible waste management option at the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center (FDC).
